My name is Joey Filer, and I am a Chicago-based videographer, writer, and photographer. Outside of Chicago and the Internet, my filmmaking career has taken me both across the country and the world, from Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland to Cerro Santa Lucía in Santiago, Chile to the Audiotree Music Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
I even had the opportunity to film the Big Apple in New York City, and I mean that literally. I shot the iconic Big Apple in Citi Field for a video about Sue Lucchi – the Mets’ Vice President of Ballpark Operations.
Wherever I go, I bring a diligent work ethic, positive attitude, and passion for the ability of words and images to alter time and space, create moments, document history, and tell stories.
Since January 2018, I have been a full-time freelance videographer and writer with consistent work from Discovery Education, Audiotree, Reel Chicago, Nordstrom, among others. Prior to 2018, for nearly two years, I worked as a Video Content Coordinator for Discovery Communications, LLC.
I have also dipped my hands into the occasional passion project, such as directing/editing Without a Home: Street Dogs of Santiago, Chile and producing Matt Carlson’s Sielunmaisema: The Risto Rasa Project.
Like many filmmakers, my journey began as a kid determined to consume as many VHSs and DVDs as I could get my hands on and a ceaseless energy to direct and produce backyard shorts with friends and family. When it came time to go to college, I chose Loyola University Chicago to pursue a double major in History (my other passion) and International Film and Media Studies – Production.
Loyola’s excellent history department gave me a solid foundation in writing, research, and culture. The skills I learned there have managed to sneak their way into almost every production I have worked on since graduation in 2015. Furthermore, it informed my own voice as a writer/documentarian.
Loyola’s film department set my world on fire in the best possible sense. It was a community filled with hungry artists and brilliant educators – the ideal soup for collaboration.
Not only did I learn the technical musts behind audio engineering, editing theory, lighting, direction, acting, and camera operation, but Loyola also provided me with my first serious jobs as a filmmaker. I shot/edited 26 videos as a Videographer for Loyola’s Enrollment Marketing department, taught high school students as a Teaching Assistant for the Digital Storytelling Workshop, and as Video Director and Editor, I co-founded the live music video department of WLUW 88.7 FM.
While I could continue talking about my path, interests, and adventures, I would love to hear more from you about yours. What projects are you working on? What are your goals as a creator, business owner, or storyteller? And perhaps, are you interested in collaborating? If so, please contact me through email or LinkedIn below.
